Introduction to BIOS

Learn what BIOS is and how it can accelerate your scientific research.

BIOS is an AI Scientist built to accelerate scientific discovery. It coordinates specialized subagents for literature search and data analysis, planning and executing multi-step research workflows while you steer.

What is BIOS?

BIOS is a powerful research assistant that combines:

  • Literature Agent - Searches and synthesizes across scientific publications, patent, and clinical trial databases
  • Data Analysis Agent - Generates and executes Python code for statistical analysis and visualization
  • Planning Agent - Decomposes complex questions and prioritizes research tasks
  • Novelty Detection - Evaluates whether proposed hypotheses have been previously investigated by cross-referencing scientific literature, patent filings, and preprint archives

Research Modes

BIOS offers three modes to match different research styles:

  • Steering - One iteration at a time, full control for experienced scientists
  • Semi-Autonomous - Up to 5 iterations with checkpoints for guidance
  • Fully Autonomous - Up to 20 iterations, hands-off comprehensive research

Deep Research Workflow

Deep Research Workflow

Each research iteration follows three phases:

  1. Plan - The planning agent breaks your question into concrete tasks and assigns them to the Literature or Data Analysis agents
  2. Execute - Agents run in parallel, searching literature and analyzing data
  3. Refine - The conversation state is updated with new discoveries and key insights, the current hypothesis is refined based on findings, and next steps are generated

This cycle repeats, with each iteration building on previous discoveries.

State-of-the-Art Performance

The Data Analysis Agent achieves #1 on BixBench, a challenging bioinformatics benchmark testing real-world analytical scenarios across genomics, transcriptomics, and differential expression. See our paper for details.
